"We're back in action
Without distraction
Not some knee jerk reaction
Just 100% pure guaranteed satisfaction
We are the... TWIN CITY FACTION!"

This is the rant that tops and tails each Twin City Faction set at a show. They're a very energetic hardcore/rock band from Sydney who've been keeping it real for about four years now and don't seem to be slowing up any time soon.

Twin City Faction
Twin City Faction

Twin City Faction formed in 2002, influenced by the likes of the Hellacopters and JW Erwing, and played their first show around the beginning of 2003. They self-released their first EP on their own label 'DIY or DIE Records' (which has also released and distributed stuff for Four Days in a Maze, Mergatroid, the ROFL/Frank Rizzo split and upcoming releases for Blasting Process and If Provoked) and toured Melbourne in 2004. A second EP was released by Sydnel label Sold Our Souls in 2004 as well. Twin City Faction are currently in the final stages of recording their LP, set for release in spring this year.

The Suns

June 29th 2006 06:04
The Suns! Okay, so they aren't really Australian, but I think they deserve honorary Australian-band status due to their two years of entertaining service to us

The Suns - myspace page, go here to hear some fabulous MP3s.
Ballad of Tabitha - a filmclip from when they were called The Borephucks (right click and save)

The Suns are a rock trio originally hailing from Singapore who relocated to Melbourne in 2004 and have built up a pretty impressive fanbase by being incredibly entertaining and writing really fun and catchy pop-rock songs. They're also exceptional musicians and through in the odd bit of cock rock, punk and reggae for some fun.

The Suns started in 1997 bas The Boredphucks in Singapore. They were apparently pretty popular back in their home country and released a well-recieved album that got some airplay. But it all came crashing down when they played a festival called Localpalooza and let fly some obscenities about 'someone's mother's genitalia' or something like that (I don't think it translates well, but let's just say it was offensive) and got arrested by Singaporean authorities (which is no holiday!) The charges levelled against them could have seen them gaoled for up to two years, but afer six months the charges were dropped and the band was banned from playing in Singapore. This meant they could no longer play at any government-funded shows and could no longer get any airplay. They played a few more self-organised shows to launch their album and stuff but it didn't look good for the band.

MEMBERS
Sanjeev Veloo - Vocals, Guitar
Justin Roy - Bass, vocals
Wayne Seah - Drums, vocals

So they changed their name to 'The SunS' (yes, with a capital S on the end) and relocated to Melbourne, Australia in 2004. Eventually they dropped the capital on the end of the name and they toured out and about across Australia and South East Asia, playing a shitload of shows (around 250) and impressing a shitload of people. They've released two Australian-only EPs since getting here and are now heading back to Singapore for the first time in years. Singer/Guitarist Sanjeev broke his arm a while back and a fill-in was brought in to keep things pumping along but it looks like he's ready to play again now, and The Suns are about to start recording an album. Hooray!

Repressed Records

Repressed Records
Repressed Records logo - featuring Chris!
Repressed Records is a radical cool-dudes music store in Penrith (Western Sydney!) It's the best record store in all of Penrith I reckon... the guy who runs it, Chris, is a cool dude who just loves music, and his staff (Ravi and Nick) are cool dudes who love music too.

Repressed Records started out as a Penrith branch of a Parramatta record store, Beatdisc. For a while Repressed Records was called Beatdisc but I think Chris bought out the name or some shit and renamed it accordingly and made it his own. They started out just stocking second hand CDs but eventually started ordering in new stock too - and the prices stayed low! They specialise in a lot of metal (thrash, doom, industrial, black metal, etc) and also stock some cool punk and hardcore stuff and hip-hop, and they'll keep their eyes out for pretty much anything you're after. They also carry a bit of vinyl if you're a vinyl enthusiast, including some ultra-cheap $1 vinyl (of crazy stuff like Culture Club and The Cockroaches... I got Men At Work and Hoodoo Gurus on record there for a dollar each!)

If you're in a local band in the Penrith they'll stock your stuff for you too. Recently, they've started having monthly instores... Terror Beyond Grace played in there for the first one, followed by Anarchoi and Chaz. H. Scally. The Undersided played there for the May instore, and the most recent one was The New Justice Team and The Bernie Lomax Five. It's a great atmosphere to see a band play in a record store... it's not too big, it's intimate and fun (and free!), and the sound bouncing off all the records and CDs is surprisingly good.

Anyway, if you're ever out Penrith way I reccomend you check out this store. It can be found on Station Street, just near Spotlight (opposite the Cash Converters Buying-entry). Say yes to independent record stores before they all get replaced by Sanity and JB HiFi.

Baltic

June 23rd 2006 12:31
Baltic are a self-described 'Power-Rock' band from Sydney. Comprised of musicians previously from predominantly punk and hardcore bands, Baltic is a bit of a change of pace for most of the quartet. Regarding the name's origin, vocalist Ari explained, "I was really into excessive, powerful names like Boston and Chicago so I thought Baltic was sweet."

Bagster

Bagster are a popular Sydney-based band. At one point they would've been described as ska/punk but they've moved on from that genre by a fair distance so I guess now they're just 'rock with horns'.

Rhubarb! Remember those guys? I pretty much only really remember them from their big Triple J hit 'Exerciser', but they've been busy beavers ever since and have built up a respectable fanbase. Amazingly, the band were able to give up their day jobs after their initial Triple J success and have been keeping the dream alive ever since, partially thanks to their own independent record label Toupee Records.

Badanga

June 20th 2006 11:23
Badanga were a melodic hardcore/punk band originating from Western Sydney. They formed in 2000 and split about three years after that. They put together only one EP... to be honest I'm not if it was ever released officially or anything, you can download every single track off various MP3 websites now that theyve all moved on to other things.

The Mark of Cain

June 17th 2006 08:02
The Mark of Cain are a heavy-as-fuck three-piece alternative rock band from Adelaide. They aren't really metal, but play something approaching metal in style and heaviness. I guess you'd just say there were alternative rock in the end, but that's a pretty vague label. I wish I had some MP3s to direct you to but I haven't been able to find any for The Mark of Cain.

Headless Horsemen

June 16th 2006 09:34
Headless Horsemen were a shortlived thrashy-hardcore band straight outta Hornsby, Sydney. A four-piece, the members had previously played in other punk and hardcore-related bands (Meataxe, Fistful, Dot Dot Dot and Nintendo Police). They formed in 2002.

H-Block 101

June 15th 2006 11:47
If you ask me (and by reading this, you essentially do), H-Block 101 are probably the greatest current(ish) punk band in Australia. I first saw them in 1998 at the Iron Duke in Sydney, where they played as part of a Hardcore superbonanza styled show. They were the best band of the night and their performance was electrifying, I was hooked and became a huge fan. If you've seen them play and didn't like them I'd venture that you're probably boring.

Chaz. H. Scally are some Penrith dudes who have been keeping skacore alive (pretty much all on their lonesome) in Western Sydney for the last couple of years. They're the perfect mix between hardcore and ska, they don't disservice one side in favour of the other - they keep it REAL yo!

More Flyers

June 12th 2006 11:14
Thought I'd post up some more flyers... pretty much all punk shows from Sydney.

Blacktown
Blacktown All-Ages show (probably from around 2001)
Unpaid Debt are probably the only band on this flyer still going today. I think most of the other bands leaned more towards metal... there were a lot of metal bands in Western Sydney around this time. There probably still are... Cryogenic are probably the biggest metal band to ever come out of the Greater West, virtually every other metal band went nowhere. And they probably still do. You Blabbed About Mars were a weird/prog rock style band made up on older dudes, they played a lot of shows but I never really remember them being all that popular with 'the kids

Unpaid Debt

Unpaid Debt
Unpaid Debt
Probably one of Western Sydney's bigger home-grown punk success-stories, Unpaid Debt have gone from strength to strength and have gathered a lot of momentum in the last few years. They've also undergone more than their fair share of changes, stylistically and in terms of band members. Drummer Damo is now the only original member left in the band but the band's energy remains high and you could argue that they've only gotten stronger with each dramatic change that has befallen them.

Unpaid Debt formed in 2000 as 'Sucker Punch' from the remnants of a couple of older Western Sydney bands. The name didn't really last beyond their first show due to there already being a band under this name in America somewhere, though the band kept the name 'Sucker Punch' for their first EP. Sentimental I guess

Steppin Razor

June 10th 2006 02:01
Steppin Razor are a Sydney-based ska/punk band in the vein of Rancid, The Clash, H-Block 101, etc, etc. They formed in late 2004 and have pretty much filled Sydney's ska-punk niche... coming at a time when bands of this nature are either few and far between or of a lesser quality. Their original drummer Adam has been recently replaced by Tome. They follow in the footsteps of much-loved defunct Sydney ska-punk band 'The Last Hemeroids', of which Sax player Mark was a former member.

Band Names

June 8th 2006 05:36
Ah the mighty band name. Sometimes it can be a band's biggest bane, their achilles' heel if you will. Some bands never settle on a name - my housemate's band has been trying to decide a new name for two years now. Seriously - they just can't agree at all! So, if you're in a band, here are some tips or obstacles you might need to acknowledge on your way to finding a suitable name...

Game Over - Pop Punk

Game Over
Game Over - One Down
Melbourne band Game Over are one of those pop-punk bands that everyone seemed to love in the mid to late 90s... there were a whole heap of bands of this style and it was around this time that Fat Wreck Chords and all the bands on that label (Lagwagon, NoFX, Diesel Boy, etc, etc) were getting a lot of exposure over here in Australia. It was only natural that we'd develop our own counterparts. Game Over are probably one of the more remembered of these bands.

Jihad Against America
Jihad Against America

The controversially named Jihad Against America formed 'out of the ashes' (so to speak) of September 11's tragic events in 2001/2002. A six piece consisting of three singers (allegedly including twins dubbed 'The Twin Towers'), a guitarist, a strap-on casio keyboard player and a drummer, they managed to stir up a bit of a hornet's nest in their brief lifetime in Melbourne - as you could imagine. Their sound has been described as 'death-pop' and 'the B52s on acid'. Some of the members were previously from Tasmanian black metal band The Grimm.

Downtime (Australian hardcore)

June 4th 2006 03:50
Downtime
Downtime, original lineup, from the filmclip 'Monkey'
Downtime were pretty much the band that got me into hardcore punk. Sure, I loved Toe to Toe, and One Inch Punch were great too, but for me - it was all about Downtime. They were fast when they needed to be, didn't mind slowing it up for some mad crunchy metal-ish action (and this was before nu-metal happened so it didn't sound like the shitty metalcore stuff that some hardcore has mutated into nowadays), and they had some great lyrics that really spoke to me.
