Music Australia - October 2006

Yeah okay I went to Supernova this weekend (an anime/sci-fi/fantasy convention that happens in Sydney once a year) and I was wandering around just checking stuff out and I came across this table that had been hired by Slimey Things, a band who bill themselves as 'Australia's Only Sci-Fi Rock Band'.

A Song to download (right click and save)
Space Toast

The guy at the desk, who was dressed in business clothes and had a strange contraption on his head that resembled something out of 'Ghostbusters' or 'Explorers', was giving me the hard sell and trying to get me to come to his band's show... that's pretty dedicated, hiring out a desk at a geek convention and cold-calling everyone who walks past in the hope that they'll come to your show. They had merchandise and CDs and had a DVD of themselves playing live broadcasting from a TV on their table... it was great, you have to admire that kind of dedication.

This is the guy who was sitting at the desk.

Anyway, they sound kind of cool... kind of like the B52s meets Devo, weird schlocky b-grade sci-fi sounds and a bit of surf rock and avant-garde pop. Judging from the DVD they look like they put on a fun show too.

Oh, and the guy claimed that the DVD was actually a recording of their show from a week in the future and that they brought it back in time so we could see what kind of show it would be next week. So yeah - sci-fi as!

They've been playing together since 2001, and have an EP out called 'Space Toast' (2005). They also put out an earlier EP in 2001 called 'Brainiac'.

What is your favourite AC/DC song?

October 26th 2006 10:54

AC/DC are an Australian institution. No other Australian band has made an impression on the world as big and longstanding. No other band has survived the death of a legendary singer as resolutely. No other band has a guitarist as iconic as Angus Young (see picture!)

There are very few members of modern western society who can claim to have never heard an AC/DC song.

Sure, they've re-written the same album more than a few times, but it rocks so fucking hard it just doesn't matter. Here are some of my favourite songs...

'Who Made Who' - the title track from Acca Dacca's soundtrack for the Stephen King film 'Maximum Overdrive'.
'Dirty Deeds' - 'Dirty Deeds' never sounded more fitting then when it was used in the soundtrack for the 2002 Aussie gangster flick 'Dirty Deeds', played over scenes of 60s whitebread crooks smashing poker machines with mallets.
Jailbreak - Yothu Yindi covered this song once... it's pretty funny. Nothing beats the original though.
You Shook Me All Night Long - One of the most memorable rock songs of the 80s.
Back in Black - The awesome title track from Acca Dacca's (arguably) most famous album.
You Aint Got a Hold On Me - AC/DC have often been accused of plagiarising themselves too often. For evidence that their ultra-defined and never-varying sound is 100% intentional, check out this more laid back and melodic track from their first album ('High Voltage' - not to be confused with the American-release album of the same name). Several other songs on the album sound even less like the AC/DC we've come to love so much... one song, 'Love Song', even verges on being a glam rock-opera ballad of some sort.
Money Talks - Just a great song.
Hail Caeser - One of my favourites, from the 1995 album 'Ballbreaker'. Proof that AC/DC could still bring the quality rock some twenty-odd years after they formed.
Shake Your Foundations - Single from their poorly-received 'Fly On the Wall' album (1985). A fairly 80s sound for the band that usually stands outside of time. I dunno, I really love this song - I must be in the minority!
Hells Bells - Another top song.

And these are just the tip of the iceberg... T.N.T., Highway to Hell, Can I Sit Next To You Girl, Whole Lotta Rosie, the list goes on and on. So many great songs.

Anyone else got any favourites?

Midnight Oil - Species Deceases

October 24th 2006 09:06

Midnight Oil
"Species Deceases" (1985)

This four-track EP by Midnight Oil (one of only two EPs they ever released) is an amazingly concise collection of memorable tunes. Most bands of Midnight Oil's stature wouldn't even bother with EPs, or if they do they usually just chuck on one good song and fill the rest out with B-sides... but the consistency of this EP is fucking high. All four songs are corkers.

1. Progress - this is a real thumping heartfelt message-piece with a great build up and some cool shouted backups. Vintage Australian epic-rock.
2. Hercules - probably the most well-known track from the EP, featured on the Oils' Greatest Hits album (20 000 Watt R.S.L.), this is a catchy track that most aussies have heard on the radio at one point or another.
3. Blossom and Blood - my favourite of the EP I think, a catchy guitar-driven tune with a great chorus.
4. Pictures - classic rockin' 80s Midnight Oil at it's best.

It's all gold, there's no clunkers. If you see this EP anywhere, snap it up, it's well worth your attention.

Paul Kelly - Gossip

October 18th 2006 05:39
Gossip is a double-album initially released by Paul Kelly and the Coloured Girls in 1986. It has subsequently been re-released a couple of times. Probably because it's really good.

'Gossip' contains the hit classics 'Before Too Long' and 'Darling It Hurts' but all twenty-odd songs contained on the album are just as strong. From the atmospheric build up of 'Last Train to Heaven' to triumphant heraldry, and the smooth melodies of 'Randwick Bells', there are a lot of memorable moments to be found in these superbly written songs

This is an interview I did a while ago with The Bazooka Joes, a young psychobilly/rockabilly trio from the Blue Mountains. I don't think they're around anymore, they've moved onto other more lucrative music projects

Kampei

Kampei – Back to the Day Job
There are 8 songs squeezed onto this debut from Kampei, and all snappy punk/pop ditties that are easy to like too. It’s hard to pick favourites, but I will anyway… “Credibility”, “Closed Down” and “Back to the Day Job”. They mix it up a bit with a few jazzy bits and stuff like that, and they’re definitely their own band – Australian-sounding female vocals are hard to come by in the genre and it’s not all power chords and that kind of shit either, so yeah I like it heaps. The lyrics also cover a wide range of topics from the serious (band’s who jump from trend to trend) to the anecdotal (“Karaoke King”) and the farcial (“Under Suspicion”, I assume it’s not based on fact!) The CD’s not as good as the band are live (what is these days?), but it’s close enough to own

Draft Dodger

October 9th 2006 08:13

This an interview I did with Neil Bramley a little while back, when he was doing vocals in Draft Dodger. Neil has also been in Brisbane hardcore bands such as Bjelke-Peterson Youth and B.A.Barracus, and is currently in Omission from God (though they might've changed their name at the time of writing)

Chaz. H. Scally cds

October 6th 2006 10:47
Chaz. H. Scally
demo
I scored this for free at a PCYC show where Chaz. H. Scally played their first show. Basically the band is three members of Penrith ska-core band Titan Outfits with an added bassplayer. I think I actually prefer this band to Titan Outfits, it’s more melodic and rock/punk based, and they were tight live so this CD is actually a really good indication of what they sound like. There are four songs, the best of which is probably the opener “Attack in Progress”. There isn’t much else to say… the best bits are when they all sing for the big group vocals. I like it

Cosmic Psychos show!

This is a review I wrote after seeing the Cosmic Psychos play in Sydney late last year. Sadly, the guitarist from the Psychos died just recently, so this was probably the only time I'll ever see them.

Steppin Razor

Steppin Razor
Self-titled
I don’t know if you’d call this a demo because it sounds pretty spotless and looks like a regular CD, so I’ll just assume this is an (ahem) “debut EP”. Steppin’ Razor are a Sydney-based ska-punk band… Think Rancid, Last Hemeroids, Operation Ivy, all that sort of thing, complete with a sax player. The EP kicks off with an instrumental but I don’t really dig instrumentals so I won’t comment… the rest of the CD is good though. ‘Criminal’, ‘All About Control’ and ‘Tell Us What You’re Gonna Do” are all great catchy tracks with great gang-choruses, and “Politics” just sits really well with me, not because of it’s lyrics or anything, I just like the shape of the song I guess. Anyway, if you like ska-punk even a little bit then you should get yourself a copy of this EP because it’s rad
