Music Australia - November 2006

Silverchair

November 28th 2006 07:57

I like Silverchair. Back when they were just a grunge band I have to admit that they didn't really do much for me, I liked the occasional song but when they got all ballady and stuff with 'Ana's Song' and 'Cemetery' I can't say I was too impressed. But then they brought out Diorama and oh, fuck me, it was one of the best albums I've ever heard. Still is. It's probably one of the best albums in Australian music history, it's so well-written and the songs are original and the band managed to create a new sound without falling prey to 'the suck'. Oh I just think it's great! And if you disagree I will probably fight you*

Anyway, I just wanted to post a discography of the band.

Plonker - Emergency Punk Response

November 27th 2006 06:21

This is the second (and last?) E.P. from Darwin’s ‘premier’ punk band, the absurdly-named Plonker. It’s a bit more refined than their first E.P. When Librarians Attack (which whilst recorded in a more lo-fi way also retained some of the rawness that goes hand-in-hand with this kind of punk-rock).

Emergency Punk Response is more poppy, a few ‘woahs’ here and there, lots of three-chord action and 77-style solos. It’s certainly more focused than their last E.P. (which was probably a little too eclectic to be truly labeled as a ‘punk’-sounding release, though I’ve noticed that the ‘everything-but-the-kitchen-sink’ approach is usually reflective of bands from isolated areas) but I don’t think it really benefits from this. Also, the backup ‘woahs’ are a little weak in parts, lacking energy, and I’d be interested in hearing it live for a comparison.

It’s not a bad E.P. by any stretch, I liked the lyrics and I love the vocals – Australian-sounding but not self-conscious about it, and there’s a general quirkiness to the songs that keeps things interesting. Oh, and the CD’s artwork is hilarious. Worth checking out for the songs ‘Raincoat’, ‘Plonker Theme #1’ and the requisite gimmicky secret track. To be honest though, it’s not the sort of thing I really listen to these days so I probably wouldn’t replay this CD that much.

Rex Banner and singer part ways!

November 22nd 2006 02:39

Sydney melodic fast punkcore dudes, Rex Banner, have parted ways with their singer Adam. When I say 'parted ways', I pretty much mean they kicked him out. Obviously, there are personal reasons and reasons of difference or whatever that are between him and the band, but with all that aside, it's a real shame as Adam was a great singer and he suited them to a T.

Adam previously sung in late 90s Melbourne pop-punk band Game Over, of which I kind of felt Rex Banner had become a 21st century evolution/extension of.

Rex Banner are a band who had been jamming togethe for quite some time before they finally found an ideal singer in the shape of Adam. Rex Banner started out with quite a few different members, and various other Simpsons-related band names, influenced by bands like Strung Out, and spent a great deal of time in rehearsal becoming the band they are now.

Through the wonders of the internet they hooked up with Adam early this year (or perhaps earlier, I don't really know), Adam was overseas at the time - very much an ex-pat - but was about to come on home to Australia. Anyway, to cut a long story short, the band and the singer came together and the end result was magic. The band finally had a frontman, they were talented guys and pretty tight, and Adam's vocals were perfect for the sound.

They started playing shows around Sydney and have gotten quite a following in the last six months. I don't think it's much of an exaggeration to say that they're quite popular. But what's going to happen now that Adam's out? Who can they possibly get to fill his shoes? Will a new singer also mean a new sound? Will the band be able to retain their popularity?

'm sure the band will continue, they'd been around for a while before Adam came on the scene, and I'm sure they won't have any trouble finding a new singer - their recent popularity has given them a lot of exposure and I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who'd love to jump into the vacant position. But a vocalist can be a hard thing to replace. One thing the band has going for it was that they haven't really released anything with Adam singing on it (aside from a demo), so when they do finally get around to recording a proper release it will be - for many people who hear the band for the first time then - a new start.

Adam's still got the Signals, a reggae/rocksteady/ska band that he sings for, so I say good luck to him. He has a great voice and I'm sure he'll keep on rocking. Good luck also to Rex Banner, I'm sure they'll keep on rocking out too, guess we'll have to wait and see what the future holds for their fans!

Midnight Oil - Earth and Sun and Moon

November 19th 2006 12:22

'Earth and Sun and Moon' is, what I think, a highly underrated Midnight Oil album from 1993. Usually 'Blue Sky Mining', '10 to 1' or 'Diesal and Dust' gets all the praise, but this later album is pretty grand

Bagster - Brutiful

I don’t understand the relevance of this EP’s name. Can someone tell me? Obviously, it’s a pun on ‘beautiful’. Is that it? Am I missing something? Am I expecting too much from a pun
