Punk Rock Explosion

February 20th 2007 13:01
Not much else doing on this blog at the moment, so I thought I'd put up this spiel I got sent to me...

PUNK ROCK EXPLOSION

Black Market Records presents the 7th in a line of highly successful punk rock shows at the Lewisham hotel on Friday 2nd March. Grease yourself up and strap on your drinking hat for yet another night of tip-top Aussie punk rock and drunken tomfoolery.

The show will include $5 Jagerbombs, along with a selection of some of Australia’s most talented independent punk rock bands led by Brisbane legends The Black Market (as seen on ABC TV’s ‘Rage’ and heard on Triple J’s Short.Fast.Loud, appearing as part of their national album release tour).

Joining them are all of Sydney’s finest; Steppin’ Razor, Sniperival, Front Your Enemy and Doin It For The Money, as well as Chaz. H. Scally from Penrith and TopNovil from Wollongong. As usual the show will be at the Livehouse, one of Sydney’s finest live venues (and best kept secrets).

The Livehouse (aka The Lewisham Hotel) is located on the corner of Parramatta Rd and Old Canterbury Road and is fast becoming the proud home of the next generation of Sydney’s ska-punk scene.

Bands start at 8:00pm but be sure to get there by 5:30 for $3.00 local beers and free striptease performances from the beautiful Bombshell dancers. It adds up to almost 10 hours of the finest entertainment you’ll find in Sydney for a price as low as $12. So put on yer skankin’ boots and get yourself down to the Lewisham Hotel Friday March 2nd to be a part of Sydney’s fastest evolving live music scene.

Dick Nasty interview

February 5th 2007 09:36
This is an interview I did with Geordie from Brisbane hardcore/maniac punk band Dick Nasty. It was conducted just prior to the release of their recent third album, 'Funny Thing Happened to me on the Way to the Grave'.

From left to right... Geordie, Cuffy, Lucas, John

Hear some tunes here - Dick Nasty.

What inspires your lyrics?
I can't speak for John or Lucas, but usually something that's pissing me off when it comes time to write the lyrics. Probably whatever's been launching me into angry rants of late.

Your last album had some pretty damn funny song titles, ala ‘I’m More Australian than a Bookful of Bush Poetry by Russell Crowe’ and ‘Your Attitude is as Fucked as my Dress Sense’, is there a system in place for determining such outlandish names?
Not really. Whoever writes the lyrics picks the title. I guess they're just the titles we like. Other people make more of a big deal about them than we do. Are they too long and pompous?? Possibly. Are they gonna get longer and more pompous?? Probably.

It’s been a while, but were you happy with how your last album was received?
Yeah, I don't think many people outside of Brisbane heard it but we hardly ever manage to get interstate so we've got no-one to blame. But most people told us they liked it to our face.

What song titles can be expect to see on the upcoming album?
The song titles will be the same long winded wank that we specialize in. A few titles are up in the air so it would be unfair to pick favourites yet.

(and how is the upcoming album shaping up?)
By the time this goes print, the CD will be finished and if all goes well, off to the pressing plant. It shits on the last one.

What is Minor Treat?
Minor Treat was a band I was in for a couple of years. Kinda metal-ly stuff. Cuffy also played drums for us near the end.

Geordie, you’re a pretty big film fan… any films the reader of this should immediately go and check out?
Off the top of my head, Point Blank (Blank, not Break, as cool as Special Agent Utah is, and make sure it's the 1967 film with Lee Marvin not the 1998 film of the same name starring Mickey Rourke), The Getaway (the Peckinpah original not the Baldwin Bassinger remake) , A Dirty Shame (barely anyone saw this, and by extension any John Waters films you haven't seen are worth your time), Sword of Doom, and the Lone Wolf and Cub/Babycart Series.

Dick Nasty's second album, 'You Are the Song My Enemy Sings'

Have you ever gotten sick of doing the Dick Nasty?
I'm sure most people who have been in a band have at some time played a shit gig or something and wondered what the fuck they were doing with their time/life. I've quit a lot but usually while drunk and surly. But music's pretty much all I give a shit about so the other guys have probably been in the position a lot more from putting up with my shit.

How do you keep motivated?
It's not hard. I get together with three friends, talk shit, drink beer and eventually try to create music that we'd want to hear. And we've been lucky in that people will stand and listen to us make noise and scream obscenities at them, and some of them even buy our CD which is mindblowing really. The music industry is a horrible beast but making music with your friends is simple and fucking fun.

What further plans are there for the band?
I think we'd all like to travel and play more both around Australia and maybe even one day overseas. No real plans though. A few ideas for the next recording have been thrown around but mostly to try and play some good gigs and write better songs. We'd love to put out some vinyl.

Any tours in the works?
Trying to get one together for Melbourne but at the moment we're excited to be traveling down your way for National Beer Day.

Finally, who is your favourite Degrassi character and what was your favourite episode?
I grew up in New Zealand where we didn't have Degrassi and I finally saw it last year on DVD. Only seen the first three episodes I think so I'll have to go with Joey Jeremiah, and my favourite episode would have to be the one where I think her name is Stephanie runs for class president.
