Eskimo Joe

July 10th 2006 09:45
I don't think anyone really ever saw Eskimo Joe coming. I mean, they're so big now... their latest single 'Black Fingernails, Red Wine' is everywhere at the moment. I remember going to uni in 1998 and having nothing to do on my lunchbreak, so I went up to the student bar and Eskimo Joe were playing in there and I was virtually the only person watching them! They were playing punk-ish songs about coco pops and monkeys and their biggest song at the time was recent Triple J hit 'Sweater'. Two years later, whilst I was still at uni, they were playing a somewhat bigger show (one that took place at night and people had to pay to see) and whilst standing outside myself and a friend convinced some random girl that our other friend with us was the drummer from Eskimo Joe. She got really excited. There's no real point to that little anecdote, I just wanted to relate it because it was mildly relevant.

MEMBERS
Kavyen Temperly (Vocals, bass)
Joel Quartermain (Drums, backing vocals)
Stuart MacLeod (Guitar, backing vocals)

Eskimo Joe got their start by winning a band comp in their native town of Freemantle, Western Australia. Drummer Joel had previously been in the band Carpet, and he and singer Kavyen played together in the band Freud's Pillow before forming the pop-rock three piece Eskimo Joe with Stuart. The band had an early hit on Triple J with the novelty song 'Sweater', which came off the EP they used their band comp winnings to record. The band followed up with a second EP in 1999, which got some more airplay but was still very much of the novelty/fluff side of pop-rock.

And then they signed to Modular and came out with the album 'Girl' - which got rave reviews everywhere and surprised everyone. They even got some ARIA nominatons. After this they signed to Mushroom Records (I think Modular expected bigger sales as far as 'Girl' was concerned) and Joel (who had recorded guitar parts and other stuff for the album) switched from the drums to guitar for the band's live shows. Paul Keenan was brought in as a live drummer and Dan Bull was enlisted for live keyboards.

In 2004 the band brought out the album 'A Song is a City', which actually saw them win some ARIA awards. They have now followed this with a third album and are currently exploding all over the media in a fairly distasteful manner. I expect we'll be hearing a lot more from them as the years go by!
