Common Bond from 'When Worlds Collide'.

Perish The Thought are a melodic hardcore band originating from Sutherland Shire, Sydney. They formed in 2001, and as you can see in the above photo, they cite The Village People as a major influence, as well as hardcore and punk bands such as Mid Youth Crisis, Avail, Hot Water Music, Face to Face, Mindsnare and Propagandhi.

The band originally came together as a four-piece after a previous band, Strength in Numbers (which some of the members came from), broke up. They recorded a demo and gained some good support slots, after which guitarist Mitch decided to leave the band. When it came time to replace him it was decided to have two guitarists rather than one. Both these guitarists have since left (a year or two later) and been replaced (with Mitch returning to the fold).

The band formed their own record label, Common Bond Records (which I think has since been sold on to someone else), on which they could release their own music. So far they have only released splits and songs on compilations but they are currently in the midst of putting together their first solo effort, an EP slated for release later this year, which will also feature assorted footage of the band.

CURRENT MEMBERS
Dan Wecksler - Guitar
Matt Gibbons - Bass
Ryan Willmott - Vocals
Mitch Pike - Guitar

Dan has also played in Ballpark and Irrelevant. Previous guitarist Chris Bischoff also played in Veto, Slug 7, Restraint and Means To An End/Omerata (who recently called it a day). David Virgilio (the band's other previous guitarist) had also played drums in Not For You, Ceasefire, Restraint and Project Always.

The band has toured to both Melbourne and Brisbane a few times, and has played with well-renowned bands such as Ensign, Champion, Parkway Drive, Terror, Sommerset, The Hope Conspiracy, I Killed the Prom Queen, Against, Pilot to Gunner, Shai Hulud, Miles Away, Mindsnare and The Nation Blue.

Schifosi are a down-tuned punk/crust band from Melbourne. They formed around 2002 and are still going strong with some recent international tours under their wings. The band lineup has remained fairly unchanged since the start, the only difference being the addition of Jacquie on second guitar in 2003.

MEMBERS
Kate - vocals
Bart - bass, vocals
Tim - drums, vocals
Jacquie - guitar
Tristan - guitar

Tim also plays in fellow Melbourne bands Pisschrist and ABC Weapons, and Jacquie played in the recently defunct Terra Firma. Bart also plays in ABC Weapons.

They embarked on a successful six week tour of the US in 2005, with the bands Countdown to Armageddon and Kakistocracy. They also recently toured New Zealand this year with Scab.

They are planning to release a new 12" in the near future on Alerta AntiFascista, so look out for some shows to coincide with that. It will also be available on CD and tape.

Jihad Against America

Jihad Against America
Jihad Against America

The controversially named Jihad Against America formed 'out of the ashes' (so to speak) of September 11's tragic events in 2001/2002. A six piece consisting of three singers (allegedly including twins dubbed 'The Twin Towers'), a guitarist, a strap-on casio keyboard player and a drummer, they managed to stir up a bit of a hornet's nest in their brief lifetime in Melbourne - as you could imagine. Their sound has been described as 'death-pop' and 'the B52s on acid'. Some of the members were previously from Tasmanian black metal band The Grimm.

Downtime (Australian hardcore)

Downtime
Downtime, original lineup, from the filmclip 'Monkey'
Downtime were pretty much the band that got me into hardcore punk. Sure, I loved Toe to Toe, and One Inch Punch were great too, but for me - it was all about Downtime. They were fast when they needed to be, didn't mind slowing it up for some mad crunchy metal-ish action (and this was before nu-metal happened so it didn't sound like the shitty metalcore stuff that some hardcore has mutated into nowadays), and they had some great lyrics that really spoke to me.
