The Internet

In the last five years it has become easier and easier for independent bands in Australia to tour interstate. I know this firsthand… I started playing in bands ten years ago and it was almost impossible to build up the contacts necessary to travel interstate without first getting some sort of name for yourself. Now, I find that you don’t even have to do that and I think it’s all thanks to the Internet.
You see, the Internet is a wonderful and magical place where everybody is friends with everybody else and everybody is respectful of each other’s differences… no, not really. I just think that the rise of online music sites and the forums that often go hand-in-hand with them has helped build up various Australia-wide communities. Now, obviously, this isn’t directly responsible for bands finding it easier to travel interstate to play shows but I think it definitely helps make people more contactable across great distances – especially in Australia where we are forever oppressed by the ‘tyranny of distance’. This oppression is lessening every day, thanks to the immediacy of places like forums, messageboards, myspace and blog networks. One of the bands I am in finds out about at least half of our shows via myspace and email… so to all the fuckwits who continuously weep over the Internet killing music, Jesus Christ – live in the now!
Anyway, I digress… here are some Australian sites (NOT label sites) worth checking out.
OzMusic Project - indie/rock music
Punkhardcore.com - punk music, forum
Bombshell - punk music, forum
Adelaide Bands - pretty self-explanatory
screamingbloodymess - DIY hardcore, forum
AusHardcore - metal/rock/punk
Aus Music/ - Australian Music community, forum
Dizzybeat - reggae/ska, forum
InsideMetal- metal
Local-Live - Adelaide music
The Dwarf - Australian-wide music, forum
Punk ACT - ACT punk
Triple J - JJJ radio site
Faster Louder - rock
GirlPunk.net - girl punk
NoiseTheory- rock/punk/metal, forum
Punk Alliance - punk, mainly QLD based, forum
The Music- music business
MP3.com - lots of free MP3s of mainly independent bands
The forums are always a good place to start if you want to find out what's going on, especially in regards to local shows you could go see, or (if you're in a band) what other bands you could swap shows with interstate. Anyway, all those links are currently active and running (with the possible exception of the ozmusicproject - it seems to not have been updated in quite a while but it's still a pretty good resource if you're trying to track down information about extinct bands) so go check some out!
