Midnight Oil
"Species Deceases" (1985)
This four-track EP by Midnight Oil (one of only two EPs they ever released) is an amazingly concise collection of memorable tunes. Most bands of Midnight Oil's stature wouldn't even bother with EPs, or if they do they usually just chuck on one good song and fill the rest out with B-sides... but the consistency of this EP is fucking high. All four songs are corkers.
1. Progress - this is a real thumping heartfelt message-piece with a great build up and some cool shouted backups. Vintage Australian epic-rock.
2. Hercules - probably the most well-known track from the EP, featured on the Oils' Greatest Hits album (20 000 Watt R.S.L.), this is a catchy track that most aussies have heard on the radio at one point or another.
3. Blossom and Blood - my favourite of the EP I think, a catchy guitar-driven tune with a great chorus.
4. Pictures - classic rockin' 80s Midnight Oil at it's best.
It's all gold, there's no clunkers. If you see this EP anywhere, snap it up, it's well worth your attention.
