Paul Kelly - Gossip
October 18th 2006 05:39
Gossip is a double-album initially released by Paul Kelly and the Coloured Girls in 1986. It has subsequently been re-released a couple of times. Probably because it's really good.
'Gossip' contains the hit classics 'Before Too Long' and 'Darling It Hurts' but all twenty-odd songs contained on the album are just as strong. From the atmospheric build up of 'Last Train to Heaven' to triumphant heraldry, and the smooth melodies of 'Randwick Bells', there are a lot of memorable moments to be found in these superbly written songs.
Kelly makes use of a wide range of sounds and guest musicians whilst remaining strictly within his rock/blues/country/pop framework - it's a very Australian and natural/honest-sounding album, and not once does he sacrifice it's overall cosistency for gimmickry or easy over-production.
Paul Kelly is pretty much canonised as one of Australia's best singer-songwriters, and if you ever wanted to listen to a good example of his work then I don't think you could go past this album. It has a cool laid-back vibe to it, very chilled out and it makes me feel good just listening to it. Lookout for some mad bluegrass action too on the track 'The Ballroom' and the sweaty tin-shed gospel rock of 'Tighten Up'.
