Repressed Records - Ravi

August 30th 2006 07:51
I'm gonna do something a bit different today.
I asked Ravi from Independent Penrith record store 'Repressed Records' for some Top 5s, so here they are...

Australian Releases!

1. Radio Birdman – Radios Appear (Awesome rock/punk frantic and urgent as hell, easily one of the best bands of the initial punk movement in both Australia & the world)

2.The Saints – (I’m) Stranded (Same as above, The Saints blew a lot of the U.K & U.S bands of the time out of the water.)

3.Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – Abattoir Blues/ Lyre of Orpheus (I usually don’t like double albums as there is a lot of filler, but both discs on this album are great. However Lyre of Orpheus is clearly the better of the two. Awesome stories and songs, Nick Cave is one of Australia’s best song writers.)

4. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – Murder Ballads (Brutal, bloody and sinister. 10 songs about murder and mayhem make this album a classic. Featuring appearances from the likes of PJ Harvey and Shane MacGowan is also a bonus.)

5. Toe to Toe – Tao (This albums was one of the first hardcore punk albums I heard. Tao is short, fast & loud making it an essential Australia hardcore release in the days before every single band in Australia played ‘hardcore’.

International Releases!

1. The Flaming Lips – Soft Bulletin (This album is unbelievably brilliant. Songs such as ‘Feeling Yourself Disintegrate’ & ‘Suddenly Everything Has Changed’ convey so much emotion. The Flaming Lips have gained a reputation as a gimmick band due to their live performances with weird props and costumes; however nothing could be further from the truth. Anyone who thinks that they are simply a gimmick band should listen to this album.)

2. Refused – The Shape of Punk to Come (This album is now eight years old and yet no other band has caught up it. Song to Fan The Flames of Discontent was a good hardcore album but TSOPTC was simply a great record for any genre. Songs such as ‘Liberation Frequency’ & ‘Summer Holidays Vs. Punk Routine’ represent some of the best songs in the modern day punk scene and who can forget the first time they heard ‘New Noise’. I truly believe that in twenty years kids in the punk scene will be talking about Refused in the same way people talk about The Clash or The Ramones at the moment.)

3. The Smiths – The Queen is Dead (Extremely witty, extremely wimpy, and extremely depressing. The Smiths were great and with lyrics such as “Sweetness, sweetness I was only joking
When I said I'd like to smash every tooth
In your head” it is hard to not fall in love with this album. Morrissey & Marr at their very best.)

4. Fugazi – Thirteen Songs (Now I know this isn’t an album so much as a collection of E.Ps but it was the first Fugazi CD I bought and therefore holds the highest ranking place amongst their other albums in my collection. Frantic and urgent sounding this CD is terrific, great bass, great guitar, great vocals and great songs make this a great album. Now that I am thinking about it I feel like revising the list of albums so far to include The Argument and Repeater. Hardcore kids need to forget Minor Threat and buy Fugazi albums!)

5. Belle & Sebastian – If You’re Feeling Sinister (A lot of the things I said about ‘The Queen is Dead’ apply to this album as well. I like the fact the Belle & Sebastian do not just have a couple of lines of lyrics and repeat them over and over; they have a lot of story based songs which I also dig.)

Top 5 live performances

This is hard because I don’t really go to that many gigs and quite often can’t remember the ones I have been to.

1. The Flaming Lips @ Hyde Park London 2006. (Awesome show, Wayne Coyne danced around in the bubble over the crowd, a guy proposed to his girlfriend on stage, lots of epic songs and it was just plain fun. Highlights included ‘Race for the Prize’ & ‘Do You Realise’.)

2. AFI @ The Roundhouse UNSW 2003. (I was really into AFI at this time and although I don’t remember too much about this show I remember I really enjoyed myself and would not stop talking about it for the next few months.)

3. Hot Snakes @ The Annandale Hotel 2005 (This show was intense, right from the opening. They opened with ‘I Hate The Kids’ and the intro to the song made my ears throb. The cover of Drive Like Jehu’s ‘Laua’ was also amazing. They broke up shortly after this show and I can’t wait to see what the members do next.)

4. Dillinger Escape Plan @ The Gaelic Club 2005. (The time before when DEP toured I couldn’t go as I was broke and really behind in uni, from what I hear that show was amazing as well. This show was unreal; from the opening song right until the end they assaulted our ears. Calculating Infinity was the first DEP record I heard, I hated it straight away and it didn’t get another listen for months and months. However I now think Calculating Infinity and Miss Machine are awesome and by the time of the 2005 tour I was a massive fan. The fact that they didn’t do an encore was also great; I really get sick of bands doing encores as it is often included in the set list and standard procedure.)

5. ISIS @ The Koko London 2006. (There is a million other gigs I would like to include, everything from shitty local Penrith gigs in 2000 to things like Mindsnare, T(I)NC, Tiger Army, Belle & Sebastian, Will Haven & The Beasts of Bourbon. However you asked for five and as this was one of the last gigs I went to it remains on my mind. Isis played every track from Oceanic and as an encore they played some of Panopticon. The sound was great and the band was incredibly tight. )
