The Compound and Maggotsville
December 17th 2006 23:48
The Compound (or 22, as it's sometimes known, but never 'Club 22' [the operators will kill you if they hear you call it that!]) and Maggotsville are a pair of spaces for bands to play shows in, usually D-I-Y style punk and indie bands. They're both rad cause there's none of the bullshit that comes with playing shows in pubs or PCYCs and the like. The Compound is a small-ish room on Enmore road in Newtown, run by the people who also run the store Paint It Black, which is a few doors up. Maggotsville is a warehouse in Marrickville where some people live that also doubles as a venue for bands to play in.
Unfortunately it looks like both of these spaces will be shutting their doors to bands in the very near future. The Compound recently played host to the Sydney all-ages show for Scandinavian punk band Regulations... unfortunately noise levels have led to complaints and it looks like the venue might have to lie low for a bit if not shut it's doors completely. In the past the venue has threatened to finish up in light of some bands or people treating the place with minimal respect. What's wrong with people, eh? It's a rad place to watch bands.
Maggotsville has a few shows left, but it looks like it too will finish up soon as they have vacant rooms they can't fill (for people to live there). Without tenants the place will not be able to stay open. Obviously no one is particularly to blame about this, but it still sucks all the same.
Anyway, the main point of this post was just to say that I thought these two venues were rad and that I'll be sad to see them go (if they do indeed go, my fingers are crossed that something will work out). I'd like to say thanks to the dudes and dudettes who helped make the Compound and Maggotsville possible, I had fun whenever I played there.
