The Focus
Whilst I don’t really endorse the whole ‘let’s release a cassette tape’ thing (am I too jaded, or does the whole thing just smack of cred-baiting? I realize there’s probably a degree of irony involved, but how ironic can it be when everyone does it?), this demo tape from The Focus is fucking awesome. I think I’d muchly appreciate something of higher quality (like a CD or record) if this band releases anything else, so I think I’ll be keeping my feelers out for it.
Anyways, regarding the tape itself… it’s got some cool artwork harking to the 60s film of ‘Fahrenheit 451’ and the songs are a cool late 80s/early 90s style – you’ll have to excuse me here as I’m not sure quite how to express it – of punk veering towards indie, maybe like the ‘punk’ played by Americans in Seattle or like some early 90s Australian stuff (I dunno… like Lawnsmell maybe?) Anyway, I digress.
I liked the mix of all three band members doing vocals at different points and the way they contrast against one another. The guitar seems slightly out of tune sometimes but I’m not sure if this is intended or not so I don’t think I’ll comment on it any further. Anyways, this tape rules, and the band was even better live. I’m aware one of the members was in some hardcore band that everyone seems to jerk off about and yeah I heard that band and I wasn’t really all that impressed so I’m inclined to think this is much better. So nyah.
