The Lyrical Madmen

The Lyrical Madmen were an 8-piece ska/reggae band from the Northern Beaches of Sydney. They broke up just recently, playing their last show about two weeks ago. Here's some cool and groovy MP3s...

The band was started by bassist Elliot Temple and his friends in late high school, 1999. Elliot brought in his older brother Jed on keyboards. The band auditioned singers but found most of them unsuitable, so Jed gave vocals a shot and the band brought someone else in for the keyboards.
The lineup has remained pretty much unchanged since then, except for the addition of Nick Broadbent on trombone in 2001. The band toured Melbourne at least three times, and played around on the Central Coast - heading to Byron Bay for New Years Eve 2003, and playing in Sawtell in 2004 (this is pretty much the only time I've ever heard of a band playing in Sawtell - I had to look up Sawtell to find out where it is [it's just below Coffs Harbour]).
After a few EPs and demos the band finally released their first (and unfortunately, last) album in late 2005. I'm not sure about the reasoning behind their breaking up but it seems pretty amicable and hopefully there'll be some reunion shows in the not too far off future.
As far as I know, no members came from bands prior to their long stint in The Lyrical Madmen. Tom, Stu, Nick and Mike have a punk-rock side project called 'The Hey Ladies' Hey Ladies website.

Nick's actually overseas for a year. Also, Elliot their bassist left the band towards the end of last year and was briefly replaced, but returned for the final show.
As you say, hopefully some reunion shows to come in the future!
