The Quickening

Holy shit. The Quickening are a band from Brisbane and they came down and played some shows in Sydney this weekend just gone and they are pretty much my new favourite band. They're a bunch of freaks... the guitarist was so jammy, he made it all look so easy. And the drummer was playing his single kick pedal like it was two kick pedals. I don't kid!
Here's some MP3s...
Fight for the 8 Hour Day mp3

The New Kings mp3 (right click and save)
Both those songs are off their self-titled album released in 2005. It's their first album but The Quickening are by no means a new band. Here's a quick rundown for anyone who's interested...
The Quickening pretty much started out on the back of high school (like all the best bands I suppose) about ten years ago. I think they had a different name then (Nob?) and they also had a second guitarist who they later jettisoned in favour of the more insular three-piece that serves them very well today. It's surprising that this weekend's tour of Sydney is their first trip out of the state of QLD, not just because they've been together for so long but also because they're so bloody good.
They put a very decent live show, full of energy and skill and laughs and drunkenness. Aside from the aforementioned 11-track album they have also released a demo 'Good Missiles, Good Manners, Good Night' in 2001, which probably isn't available anymore. Any other demos they may have done before that aren't listed anywhere on their website so I dunno ay...
They're returning to Sydney around August I think, and will probably do Melbourne then as well so look out for them in your local street press around that time for any shows because they're well worth checking out. Ten tight years of being a unit show in every second of their songs.
