Top 5 Artists
December 1st 2006 10:09
I'm going away for a few days so I'm just doing a short post on each of my blogs today.
What are your top five Aussie bands or artists?
At the moment I am really digging...
Midnight Oil (such a solid back catalogue)
Paul Kelly (in particular the album 'Gossip)
The Sharp (really got into them this year after finally finding a CD of their singles collected)
The Living End (so many good songs over the years)
Yep.

This is a tough one, but will try and whittle it down. Here we go, in no particular order:
The Saints: invented punk for themselves at the same time as a lot of other people, except they did it without the cultural infrastructure that was already in place in London and New York. There first 3 albums are better, and show more stylistic growth, than the Ramones ever did.
The Birthday Party: Nick Cave's early band were one wild and freaky bunch of miscreants. There was a time when I thought this was the most evil band on earth. Utterly original and challenging post punk that's miles away from Cave's current place as dark crooner. The Birthday Party were danger incarnate.
The Dirty Three: I've never had a more powerful emotional reaction at a gig than I have with these guys. Instrumental music with violin, guitar, and drums (plus a few other instruments and the occasional vocals creeping in). These guys are intense and beautiful.
The Scientists: Distorted swamp rock from Perth, the Scientists invented grunge as far as I'm concerned. These guys were the swaggering, badass rock group that Australia needs so badly now. Like the Stooges playing Creedance Clearwater Revivial tunes, but even better.
The Go-betweens: I'm only now really getting into this band, but Brisbane's own Go-betweens were something really special. Their jangly, off-kilter pop was appreciated overseas more than it ever was here. I'm incredibly pissed off that Brisbane's local paper the Courier Mail uses their song "Streets Of Your Town" as its advertising theme, yet didn't put Grant McLennan on the cover when he passed away this year. Heresy.
Honourable mentions go to AC/DC, Radio Birdman, Rose Tattoo, X, the Beasts of Bourbon, the Hard-Ons, Front End Loader, the Triffids, Cosmic Psychos and many more I can't think of right now.

The Church - just found about them last year, before that i only new that one song and it didn't strike me as anything special...but the album uninvited like the clouds totally blowed me away, and after that i heard their earlier stuff and i was hooked.
Robert Forster - Album made of covers "I had a New York Girlfriend". Love it.
Sunnyboys - Love to rule is one of my all time fave songs.
Mick Harvey - I like the way he plays with his songs, very interesting artist.
