Unpaid Debt
June 11th 2006 10:20
Probably one of Western Sydney's bigger home-grown punk success-stories, Unpaid Debt have gone from strength to strength and have gathered a lot of momentum in the last few years. They've also undergone more than their fair share of changes, stylistically and in terms of band members. Drummer Damo is now the only original member left in the band but the band's energy remains high and you could argue that they've only gotten stronger with each dramatic change that has befallen them.
Unpaid Debt formed in 2000 as 'Sucker Punch' from the remnants of a couple of older Western Sydney bands. The name didn't really last beyond their first show due to there already being a band under this name in America somewhere, though the band kept the name 'Sucker Punch' for their first EP. Sentimental I guess.
Original lineup...
Josh - Vocals
Matty Albert - Bass, vocals
Damien Elliot - Drums, vocals
Tim Walter - Guitar
Josh had previously been the 'dancer' for Scratch Habbit. I don't know what that exactly entailed... I never saw him 'dance' for them, but I heard a lot of people say that he was their dancer, sounds kinda embarresing if you ask me hahahah. After Unpaid Debt he did vocals for a while in hardcore band Strength Within. Matty and Damien were both previously of the band Spilt Milk. Matty and Damo also played in hardcore band Columbia's Pain, and Matty now currently plays in My Therapy. Tim Walter was previously of the band Speckled Foam, and after Unpaid Debt he played for a while in The Hipppycrits and then My Name is John. He also currently records a lot of demos and CDs for local Western Sydney bands.
After releasing two EPs of well-received ska-punk songs, the band decided to let Josh go (around 2002). Joe Catanzaro filled in on vocals for a while and eventually left his other band (a ska band called Little More Than You) to become Unpaid Debt's singer full-time. He had previously also sung in Speckled Foam.
From here the band shifted into 'overdrive', so to speak. Whilst initially remaining a ska-punk band, the emphasis started to shift more towards punk after their third EP. They also began playing a lot more. By 2005 the band would be averaging 75-80 shows a year, touring relentlessly and scoring tours and/or support slots with bands such as... Lagwagon, Bouncing Souls, Suicide Machines, Against Me!, The Mad Caddies, Goldfinger, One Dollar Short, Guttermouth, New Found Glory, The Hard Ons and the Vandals.
In 2003 original guitarist Tim was given the ol' heave ho and replaced by Andrew Morganti. Not too long after this the relentless touring got to be too much and Matty decided to leave. He was repaced by Harry Nibbs. In 2004 the band released their fourth EP 'Broken Hearts... Broken Bones' on Chatterbox Records and also won the Sydney/NSW JJJ Unearthed competition. At various points both Koby and Tommy D from Bagster have filled in on guitar duties whilst the band was between guitarists..
In 2005 Andrew parted ways with the band and was replaced by Nathan, leaving the band as it appears now. They've remained hard at work and are finally about to release their first album, which they will promote on a massive Australia-wide tour over August and September this year.
Current lineup...
Joe Catanzaro - Vocals
Damien Elliot - Drums, vocals
Harry Knibbs - Bass, vocals
Nathan - Guitar
