You Am I are pretty much an Australian institution. They play an iconic brand of alternative-rock and were the first Australian band to have 3 albums debut at number 1 on the ARIA charts.

Tim Rogers formed the band in 1989 with two other guys (they were brothers), but these guys left not long afterwards and Rogers enlisted the help of Kent and a guy called Mark Tunelay on the drums. Tunelay played with the band for the first few years but apparently didn't like the poppy direction they were heading in, so Rogers asked him to leave after their first album in 1993, and he was subsequently replaced by Rusty Hopkinson.
You Am I rose to fame on the back of a LOT of live shows. They played the Big Day Out in 1993, where Lee Ronaldo from Sonic Youth saw them. He was impressed and produced their EP 'Coprolalia'. You Am I toured the US a lot in the mid 90s and even played Lollapalozza, alongside Soundgarden and a whole lot of other big bands. The band were the darlings of Recovery and Rage in the late 90s on the ABC and gained a lot of media coverage (especially on one occasion when Tim Rogers punched Mark Holden in the head).
In 1999 Rogers started releasing solo albums, though the band remained strong. Davey Lane, previously (and still) of the band The Pictures, joined the band as second guitarist in 2001. Lane also played in the brief supergroup The Wrights (alongside Chris Cheney, that singer dude from Jet and a whole lot of other famous bozos). The band recently released their 7th album this year.
